Asian double eyelid blepharoplasty and rhinoplasty (“nose job” surgery) have been widespread cosmetic procedures throughout Asia for years now, and are starting to become more common here in the United States. Usha Rajagopal, MD of the San Francisco Plastic Surgery and Laser Center regularly sees Asian patients who are interested in the following procedures:

Asian double eyelid blepharoplasty: Some Asians do not have an eyelid crease, while others do. This surgery involves creating and defining an eyelid crease above the eye, which opens up the eye area. For women, adding an eyelid crease can make eye make-up application much easier. See Asian Eyelid Surgery before and after photos.

Rhinoplasty (Nose Job): Many patients opt for having Rhinoplasty when they undergo double eyelid blepharoplasty. Once the eyes have been altered, some patients decide to alter their nose size and shape to better fit the results of their eyelid surgery. See Rhinoplasty before and after photos.

Face Slimming using BOTOX:BOTOX® Cosmetic, known for erasing lines and wrinkles, can also be used as a highly effective and non-invasive treatment for facial slimming and jaw line contouring. Angular jaw lines and round faces are very common facial features, especially in Asian ethnicities and particularly in individuals of Korean, Chinese, and Japanese decent. In Asia, jaw bone reduction surgery has been increasing in popularity for slimming down prominent, round faces. Instead of undergoing invasive and complicated jaw bone reduction surgery with a plastic surgeon, using BOTOX® injections to contour the face and jaw line requires no downtime afterward and it is safer, faster, and less expensive than surgery. The full slimming effect becomes apparent approximately two weeks after the treatment and these results can last anywhere from four to eight months. The cost for using BOTOX® for facial slimming can range from $800-$1200 (the price of BOTOX is charged by how many units of BOTOX is used per treatment, so the exact price of treatment varies by individual).

Cankle Reduction Surgery: Some people naturally have wide ankles that are not much slimmer than their calves. This condition, which typically does not respond well to diet and exercise, is popularly referred to as “cankles.” In Asia, surgical removal of excess muscle tissue is commonly done to combat cankles. For patients who have excess fat deposits on their ankles, Dr. Rajagopal can perform liposuction on the area to create a more narrow and feminine shape to the ankles and lower calves. Some individuals have muscle hypertrophy (a natural increase in the size of muscle cells) on their ankles. Dr. Rajagopal can determine during a consultation appointment whether a patient has excess fat deposits, muscle tissue, or a combination of both, on the ankles. However, Dr. Rajagopal only performs liposuction on the ankle and does not remove muscle from the ankles. See Cankle Reduction Before and after photos.

Brazilian Butt Lift Surgery: This procedure is gaining popularity among all ethnic groups to some degree. Brazilian Butt Lift surgery involves transferring fat cells to the buttock area. Unwanted fat is first “harvested”, or removed, via liposuction from the abdomen, hips, and/or thighs. It is then purified and injected into the buttocks to give a full, natural, and feminine look. In general, Brazilian butt lift surgery is often not an option for women with very little body fat. See Brazilian Butt Lift before and after photos.

Breast Augmentation (Breast Implants): With breast augmentation surgery, women are able to enlarge their breasts to a desired cup size using either silicone or saline breast implants. Breast implants can be placed either behind or on top of the chest muscle. The type and size of the breast implants, plus the location of implant placement varies by each individual. Laser Spot Removal: Asian skin is delicate and must be treated for brown spots differently than other skin types. With gentle laser treatments, we can remove birthmarks, age spots, sun spots, and freckles.
