Earlobe Reduction and Repair in San Francisco Bay Area

Earlobes can become torn, stretched, enlarged, or otherwise damaged by physical trauma, such as an accident or a dog bite, from aging, or from heavy earrings and improper piercings. Regardless of the cause, living with a structural or aesthetic earlobe issue is a constant challenge.

With earlobe reduction and repair, here at San Francisco Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, any rips, stretching, or holes can be fixed and your earlobes returned to their proper size, shape and cosmetic balance.

What Creates the Need for Earlobe Reduction or Repair?

The earlobes are appendages of the ears made of soft skin and a small amount of fatty tissue. These lobes come in size, form, and shape, different for each individual.

When earlobes are pierced to fit various forms of ear ornaments, ranging from little studs to larger and heavier items, these delicate areas can become stretched, ripped, or unnaturally enlarged.  This trauma can make the earlobes unattractive, and unusable for most ear jewelry.

Although different techniques can be tried to cover-up this disfigurement, only earlobe reduction and repair can bring them back to where they looked before the trouble began.

What Conditions are Corrected by Earlobe Reduction or Repair?

  • Split earlobe

  • Enlarged earring hole

  • History of trauma to the earlobe

  • Stretched or enlarged earlobes

  • Earlobes that are out of proportion or balance

To determine if you are a good candidate for earlobe repair or reduction, schedule a consultation with Dr. Usha Rajagopal at our San Francisco location at 415-392-3333.

Earlobe Reduction and Repair Procedure

Dr. Rajagopal performs your earlobe reconstruction procedure here at the San Francisco Plastic Surgery and Laser Center.  The degree of the problem with the earlobe will determine the type of repair needed. After planning and marking, lidocaine numbing solution is placed on the surgical area. (General anesthesia is not required) Patients feel no discomfort during the procedure.

In order to rebuild the earlobe, the healed and scarred parts of the tear are removed. Repair is then performed. Small flaps are sometimes used to redesign the earlobe. Dr. Rajagopal will discuss with you the most appropriate technique for your particular ear structure and situation.  Fine suture threads are used to support the repair and minimize scarring. Only a tiny, pencil-fine scar will be visible after the earlobe has healed.

Recovering From Earlobe Surgery

You will feel only minimal discomfort after your earlobe repair and normally patients do fine with either no pain relieving medication or with an over the counter pain reliever such as Tylenol.  A thin layer of antibiotic ointment will be used to protect the area from infection and help with healing. A little drainage from the wound is normal and to be expected.

Patients can return to work immediately following the procedure. In most cases, dissolvable sutures are used, so no suture removal is necessary, otherwise the stitches are removed two weeks following the procedure.

You will be asked to wait three to six months after surgery before piercing or wearing earrings. The scar should be soft before you get your lobe re-pierced.
