Birthmark
Removal
Prior to the development of laser treatment,
red birthmarks could not be treated and were a major cosmetic
defect for people born with these obvious birthmarks. Greatly
improved laser technology, has revolutionized treatment of these
birthmarks. Because red birthmarks are made up of many small
veins, they are treated in the same way as facial veins.
Which lasers are used for
treating red birthmarks?
Photoderm is one of the most successful
treatments for birthmarks, with a post operative healing time
of five to seven days. Compared to the older laser technologies,
fewer treatments are needed.
When is the best time to
treat red birthmarks?
Red birthmarks usually become darker
and more raised as time goes on, if treatment does not occur
immediately. Therefore, it is best to treat these birth marks
as soon as possible. Babies may be treated safely.
How many treatments are
needed to remove a birthmark?
The number of treatments will depend
on the darkness of the birthmark; darker lesions require more
treatments. Most people need at least five treatments for
optimal results. The first two to three treatments will produce
the most dramatic improvements. Treatments should be placed
four to eight weeks apart to allow your body to remove the
maximum amount of pigment cells. You will continue to see
a lightening of your lesion after each treatment as your body
disposes of the pigment cells.
How much lightening of
the birthmark may be expected?
Most birthmarks will lighten at least
75%; some may lighten by 95%.
