Arm lift surgery, or brachioplasty, is a body contouring procedure that removes excess skin from the upper arms. After massive weight loss, some patients are left with excess, sagging skin on the upper arms that will not return to normal. In some people who are at a normal weight and have always been at a normal weight, the natural aging process can lead to excess skin and fat deposits on the upper arms. Brachioplasty is a  surgical way to reshape and redefine the area between the elbow and the armpit. For some patients, liposuction can be a better option if the issue is caused by excess fat deposits and not from stretched out skin.

Arm lift surgery is NOT a weight loss procedure. Overweight or obese patients need to wait until they have reached their goal weight before undergoing brachioplasty. Results are considered to be stable and very long lasting, but like with most body contouring surgical procedures, future weight gain and the natural aging process can offset the results overtime. Patients must be in decent health before undergoing the procedure.

Brachioplasty is performed under general anesthesia. Dr. Rajagopal will make an incision that extends from the armpit to the elbow on the back of the arms and then remove the unwanted excess skin.  The resulting scars from the procedure will gradually fade overtime. During recovery, prescription medications can help relieve pain.
